Why Big Fr and Hungry F

Francium is the biggest element with the lowest IE and EN. It has the largest atom and the valence electrons are farther from the nucleus, so it would require less energy to remove the valence electrons in order to make the amount of atoms balanced. It also has the lowest EN, since it doesn't want to gain anymore electrons due to the large size of the atom. In the periodic table, it has most energy and the fewest protons in its nucleus causing it to have the lowest IE.

Helium is the smallest element with the highest IE. It requires a lot of energy to remove its valence electrons since it already has a full shell and doesn't need to gain or lose anymore electrons. The small size of the electron in its outermost shell are most attracted to its nucleus, which explains the small size and why it has the highest IE.

Noble Gases don't have EN values. Since they already have full shells, making them stable. So they don't need to gain or lose any valence electrons. They are unreactive.

Fluorine has the highest EN. It is the smallest atom who's valence shell only needs 1 more VE to become stable. Smallest element that isn't a noble gas, so it has the great attraction for an another electron.

Magnesium is Element #12

Today I'm going to talk about the element Magnesium, the most interesting and cool element out of all :D
In Italian they call it "Magnesio", in German and Swedish they use the word "Magnesium" the same way as we do in English. Origin of the name was from the Greek word "Magnesia", a district of Thessaly.
These are some pictures of Magnesium :)

Magnesium's most common isotope contains 12 protons and 13 neutrons. Its naturally occurring isotopes are 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg, but they don't have any half-lives. Their natural abundance are 78.99% (4), 10.00% (1), 78.99% (4).
There are 12 electrons in a neutral atom for Magnesium, its shell structure is 2.8.2
The bond length in Mg is: 319.7 pm.
Magnesium's properties in pure element form are meteorites and iron.
Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust but is never found as the free metal. There are many minerals containing magnesium including magnesite and dolomite. Sea water also contains plenty of magnesium.
Magnesium in the Universe is 600000 ppb by weight and 30000 ppb by atoms
It can form compunds like, Fluorides - Magnesium difluoride: MgF2
Chlorides - Magnesium dichloride: MgCl2
Iodides - Magnesium diiodide: MgI2
Sulfides - Magnesium sulphide: MgS

IMPORTANT INFO COMING YOUR WAY - Magnesium was discovered by Sir Humphrey Davy at 1755 in England.
In 1618 a farmer at Epsom in England attempted to give his cows water from a well. This they refused to drink because of the water's bitter taste. However the farmer noticed that the water seemed to heal scratches and rashes. The fame of Epsom salts spread. Eventually they were recognised to be magnesium sulphate, MgSO4. Black recognized magnesium as an element in 1755. It was isolated by Davy in 1808 who electrolysed a mixture of magnesia (magnesium oxide, MgO) and mercuric oxide (HgO). Davy's first suggestion for a name was magnium but the name magnesium is now used.

Magnesium is an important element for plants and animals. Chlorophylls (responsible for the green colour of plants) are compounds knonw as porphyrins and are based upon magnesium. Magnesium is required for the proper working of some enzymes. The adult daily requirement of magnesium is about 0.3 g day-1.

I calculated and found out that there were 5.516100000000001 grams of magnesium in my body, what about you my friend? :P

My blog

Welcome to my blog people :) I'm Mei and I'm looking forward to meet new friends

I love to swim and play the piano. I even joined the swim team last year and I'm gonna join it this year too. I also love to eat green tea ice-cream.when I'm watching TV. Not only is it delicious, it makes me happy.

My dream is to become a pharmacist when I grow up, since most of my family members are doctors and have great expectations for me. So yeah...I guess that is about it, hope you guys liked my first post :D
